Its paradise for the nature lover and NOT for SIGHT SEEING lover
If you are a person who say very often that you need a place just to relax, I mean RELAX alone, stay away from the crowd, pollution free place and where your mobile phone will never rings and are totally cut off of your city (BSNL exceptional) then you must visit to Yelagiri once.
In short, if you are a person who sings a old tamil song “enge nimmathi, enge nimmathi ange enakor idam vendum, ange.. enakor idam vendum”. There is no single sight seeing place in Yelagiri like Ooty or Kodaikanal which have really lost their beauty due to crowd and being visited by lot of vehicles. These two queens have been fully commercialised. In Yelagiri, nothing is there other than to see her nature at her best, in varying shades of green. Very quiet place like a “poes garden” (area of ex-chief minister Jayalalithaa’s house). Ideal place to stay away from our current busy world for atleast two days. The climate is cool through out the year. The best place for trekking. This hill is otherwise called “javvadhu hills”.
Actually, Yelagiri is 4-5 hours journey from Chennai by car. Its just 45 to 1 hour to reach top of hill from Jolarpettai Railway junction. Train timings from Chennai and Bangalore given below. Apprx Rs.400 (this charge as on August, 2006) will be the demand of taxi owners to take you to Yelagiri.
There is a man-made lake which is more or less like a pond. Rowing will be allowed in weekdays and I don’t think they will allow rowing in weekends. Honey vendors are seen in all over the places and also nursery gardens too. If you start from Chennai by Road, take Blr highway from Madhuravoil route through Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram, Vellor, Ambur and Vaniyambadi. After just 2-5 km from Vaniyambadi on the high-way, there would be a left turn which would be leading to Thirupattur. Take this turn and you will find a significant left turn at about 25 km from that turn from Highway. Excellent drive till Hill. Its just 4 hour journey from chennai.
Please note that if u come from Blr, stop at Nattrampalli and ask someone how to go to Jollarpet and from Jollarpet you can reach this Yellagiri. You do not need to come till vaniyambadi which is roundabout way. Click the link to vu some pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26992222@N00/221235886/
We enjoyed every moment of our stay and we had full fun when we were doing Trekking and rock climbing. The same night resort arranged huge, fantastic camp fire for us. While we are having our dinner, we watch the most cultural dance of "karagattam" (This was arranged on some extra bucks)It was fantastic. I like this resort very much as they are very much affordable and homely. The ambiance was great. One good news!!! You cant get liquor in any of the places in Yellagiri for which you need to go all the way down to Jollarpet. It would be appreciated, if the government or local body should ban strictly on smoking and use of plastic bags. Now-a-days, even kodaikanal and Ooty has been witnessing for becoming polluted city like chennai, coimbatore and bangalore.
Yellagiri is the BEST SUITABLE place to breath pure oxygen. If you visit this place with group, its an ideal place to have fun. Stay, food and all other activities can be arranged @ nominal affordable rate. My number is +91 98840 48498 for further info. You can reach me via email also. solomon5050@gmail.com
